About Nepal

The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, commonly called Nepal, is a federal republic located in South Asia. It is an inland country surrounded on three sides by India, with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to its north.

Nepal has very few major industries and depends heavily on tourism for its income. Infrastructure such as water and electricity are still inadequate, contributing to a wealth disparity between those who have succeeded in establishing businesses and those who struggle to make ends meet.

As CheFuKo, we work alongside our partner NGO to support schools and group homes in the capital city of Kathmandu and the neighboring district of Sindhupalchok.

Origin of Support

On April 25th, 2015, Nepal was struck by a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake.

Over 9,000 lives were lost, and more than 5,000 schools were destroyed in the process. Many people lost their homes and were forced to live in tents, while the children were unable to attend school, living in fear of the next aftershock.

Three weeks after the disaster, we flew to Nepal in the hopes of helping the Nepali people with our thermotherapy treatment. As the locals had never experienced this form of therapy, many expressed appreciation for its relaxing effects.

At the same time, the local community spoke with us at length about the necessity for educational support. Many schools buildings and facilities were damaged or destroyed by the earthquake, and children struggled to commute. After learning more about these circumstances, we began to investigate how our own organization could provide assistance.

As we visited government agencies, international NGOs, and other facilities as part of our research, we learned of a prevalent issue: children were unable to attend school because their families could not afford tuition.

Education is a vital part of growing up and choosing our own futures, yet many children are still robbed of this precious opportunity. As CheFuKo, we are motivated to support as many children as possible to continue attending school.

Our Activities

① CheFuKo Foster Project
The CheFuKo Foster Project was started to help children who were unable to attend school due to their financial circumstances. In Nepal, the nation-wide SEE (Secondary Education Examination) test students take upon graduation decides which careers they will be able to pursue. Children from poorer families and lower castes are particularly desperate to achieve good results and gain financial independence.

Our aim is to help as many students as possible to attend school and realize their dreams.

② Recreational Sports Activities
Subjects such as music, art, and physical education are often undervalued in Nepali schools. To make up for this, CheFuKo offers opportunities for the children to exercise by hosting activities such sports festivals and physical fitness tests.

During the sports festival, children participated in classic Japanese events such as long jump rope and relay racing, and experienced the joy of exercising with friends. Meanwhile, the fitness tests were intended to measure physical activity levels and build stamina.

We plan to continue these activities so that many more children get the chance to enjoy recreational sports.
③ Donation of school supplies
There are a certain number of children in Nepal who can’t complete their homework because they cannot afford stationary, or are forced to leave school because they aren’t able to take their tests.

An incomplete education often affects the lives of children in serious ways. CheFuKo delivers the school supplies that are most needed for the children of Nepal to continue learning. These supplies include pencils and pens, colored pencils, and sketchbooks, as well as laptop computers for online assignments.
